Urinary incontinence is a health disorder suffered by children and adults. Losing control of bladder and involuntary leakage of urine is known as urinary incontinence.

It can be a very embarrassing situation and many do not bother to go for treatment. Women suffer the most from this problem than men. Most older people also suffer from this disease.

Some have leakage of few urine drops while others may suffer from uncontrollable strong urge to pass urine. The cause for this can be due to several reasons.

Some causes of Bladder Leakage

One cause can be due to psychological problems like insecure feeling, stress, tension, and depression.

Urinary Incontinence

Other causes can be due to neurologic injury, pregnancy, child birth, menopause, excess weight, birth defects, and ageing. It can also cause due to certain problems like weak or overactive bladder muscles, blockage, and damage of the nerves that help to control the bladder.

The muscles and nerves help to hold the urine in the bladder. The nerves take the signals from the brain to the bladder and sphincter. Then urine is brought out at the time you want to pass urine. If there is any damage or injury in the nerve, it can lead to uncontrollable leakage of urine.

Though urinary incontinence is not a serious disease, it can be the symptom of certain ailments. These are urinary tract infection, stroke, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease. It can also be due bladder cancer. Therefore, you should not be ashamed to talk about this matter to a doctor. After examining you the doctor might ask you to undergo certain tests to find out the exact reason.

The major part of the treatment for urinary incontinence is to avoid alcohol, smoking, caffeine, sweets, and carbonated drinks. Also reduce excess weight, practice stress management by doing exercise regularly, yoga and meditation.
