Most people are familiar with turmeric as a spice that is widely used in Indian cooking. However, in addition to being a popular spice, turmeric has been in use as an Ayurvedic medicine too since time immemorial. Its new medicinal uses are still being discovered. Eyes: Regular use of turmeric is good for eyes. Conjunctivitis and other eye irritations can be treated with the help of this herb. Prepare turmeric decoction and soak a clean cloth in it; then cover the eyes with the cloth. You can also prepare good eye drops using turmeric. Boil 30 ml of water by adding one tablespoon of crushed raw turmeric and then sieve it. After cooling it, use two to three drops of this liquid in each eye daily thrice.

Respiratory problems: Turmeric is used as an anti-inflammatory for mucous membranes. Regular intake of turmeric helps to cure sinusitis and brings back the sense of smell. Inhaling turmeric smoke is very useful in curing congested nasals, coughs, and asthma. Mix a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk and drink it. It helps in treating common fever, cold, cough, and asthma.

Skin problems: Turmeric is beneficial in treating skin problems like pimples, acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder along with one teaspoon of aloe vera gel. This mixture can be applied on the infected areas, cuts, wounds, acne, and burns.

Digestive problems: Turmeric improves digestion and reduces gas in the stomach. Ayurveda recommends the use of turmeric for curing chronic digestive problems. Drink half teaspoon of turmeric water thrice daily to cure diarrhea.

Arthritis: Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties help in reducing the pain of osteoarthritis. Turmeric can be applied on the inflamed area to get relief from pain.

Menstruation problems: Include turmeric in your diet for regular menses. Turmeric is an antispasmodic that relaxes the muscles and gives relief from menstrual cramps.

Anemia: Mix one teaspoon of turmeric water and honey and drink it daily. It will take care of anemia.

Arthritis: Heat the crushed or paste of mint leaves and apply the warm mixture on the affected joints and muscles. It gives great relief from rheumatism.

Allergies: Drink the decoction of mint leaves to get relief from allergic rhinitis, fever, cold, cough and sore throat that occur due to allergy.

Anemia: Mint is a good remedy to treat the iron deficiency disease called anemia.

Ayurvedic herbs and remedies have no side effects. Using limited quantity of mint leaves is very beneficial. However, excess use or use of mint oil may not be safe for all. Children, pregnant woman, and lactating mothers should avoid the excess use of it. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to make sure that you are using mint in the correct manner.
