Ayurvedic Herbs and Home Remedies for Tonsillitis

The tonsils are located at the back of the throat on each side. They are lymph nodes that fight against harmful micro-organisms that could otherwise affect the body. Though tonsils help you to prevent from falling sick frequently, however, sometimes they get affected by bacteria and viruses, and become inflamed causing tonsillitis.

Tonsillitis is a common ailment; children are especially prone to this throat problem. Usually the throat is affected by dust and from over-crowded places. Mild tonsillitis can be cured within few days by medicines and proper care. Chronic tonsillitis can accompany fever, headache, chill, sore throat, and pain while swallowing food, a change or loss of voice, nasal congestion, enlarged and inflamed tonsils. There are some Ayurvedic herbs and remedies for the treatment of tonsillitis.

Holy basil: Prepare a decoction of holy basil and water. You can drink this water as well as use it to gargle. This will give relief from sore throat, cold, and fever. You can also boil a cup of milk and add holy basil and turmeric. Drink this warm to get relief from throat infections. Alternatively, you can chew some leaves five to six times a day to get relief.

Fenugreek seeds: Gargling with fenugreek water is one of the most effective Ayurvedic home remedy to treat tonsillitis. Boil one liter of water and add two or three tablespoon of fenugreek. When it cools, use this water to gargle. It gives relief to the throat.

Lime: It is good for throat problems. In a glass of warm water add fresh lime juice, honey, and a pinch of salt. This is very effective Ayurvedic home remedy for treating tonsillitis. For better results, drink this lime juice slowly; do not gulp it down at one go.

Milk: It is used for the treatment of tonsillitis and other throat infections. Boil a glass of milk and add a pinch of turmeric and pepper, and drink this hot before bed time. It gives relief from tonsillitis pain.

Simple gargling with warm water and salt, three to four times a day, gives relief from throat pain and infections.

These are common Ayurvedic home remedies for the treatment of tonsillitis. It is very safe to use these remedies and get immediate relief from pain if used in the proper manner. However, if you feel the pain persisting or worsening the condition of tonsillitis, you should consult an Ayurvedic practitioner immediately. Some serious cases of tonsillitis would require the tonsil to be taken out surgically.
