Ginger – An Ayurvedic Herb with Many Health Benefits

Not all people know about Ayurvedic herbs and their benefits. Ginger is a well-known natural spice used for flavoring dishes. It also gives a good aroma and taste to the dishes. However, again not many know that ginger is an herb used as medicine in Ayurveda.

Ginger has been used in medicinal world from ancient times. It is said that if you have a good quantity of ginger in your kitchen, then you have a chest full of medicines for treating all kind of ailments. Ginger is easily available in all the markets. Daily intake of ginger will help you to prevent and cure several health problems.

Fever and cold: Ginger is used in treating common cold, fever, cough, and sore throat. This herb is a good medicine for the treatment of influenza. Crush a small piece of ginger and add it to a cup of water and boil it. Drink this hot by adding a little sugar. This hot ginger drink gives relief from cold and sore throat. Ginger is also beneficial in treating bronchitis, asthma, and other respiratory tract problems. It stimulates immunity.

Headache: The same hot ginger drink helps in curing normal headache to migraine pain. It gives longer relief from migraine headaches.

Vomiting: Ginger is used for treating nausea and vomiting caused by morning sickness, motion sickness, pregnancy, indigestion, food poisoning and after surgery sickness. You can add ginger to your tea and drink it daily.

Indigestion: Taking ginger daily before every meal will help in having proper digestion and improve appetite. It also gives relief from flatulence and gas in the stomach. Ginger is very effective in curing abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation and other digestive disorders. It also helps in treating stomach ulcers.

Emotional balance: Ginger is a nervine tonic that balances the mind. It helps in giving relief from stress, anxiety, tension, and depression.

Arthritis: Studies show that ginger is a good Ayurvedic herb used in treating arthritis and other swelling and pain without any side effects.

Menstruation cramps: Many women suffer from severe painful menstruation. Ginger is a good medicine for getting relief from cramps in the stomach during menstruation.

Apart from curing these ailments, ginger is capable of treating many other health disorders such as diabetes, liver diseases, kidney diseases, and heart diseases. Ginger is used to prevent blood clots, to reduce cholesterol level and high blood pressure. Though ginger is harmless and it has no side effects, excess intake of this herb can cause problems to some people. Ginger should not be used for long term during pregnancy. Some people are allergic to certain foods. It would be better to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before you use ginger for medicinal purposes.
