Ayurvedic Herbs and Home Remedies for Bronchitis

According to Ayurveda, the major cause of bronchitis is improper digestion and mental disturbances. However, modern science considers bronchitis as a health disorder caused due to viral attack on the bronchial tubes. It is a respiratory infection that causes swelling in the bronchial tubes.

Bronchitis can be acute or chronic – acute bronchitis lasts only for a few days and can be cured within one or two weeks. It is caused due to bacterial or viral infection like influenza. This can be healed faster or prevented with the help of Ayurvedic herbs.

However, chronic bronchitis persists for longer period. It is caused due to inflammation of the lungs. This inflammation results from excess intake of sweets, bananas, refined flour, preserved or fast food, milk, other dairy products, alcohol, smoking, and inhaling fumes or polluted air. If chronic bronchitis is left untreated, it can cause serious ailments such as heart enlargement and other heart related problems, asthma, damage to the lungs and bronchial tubes, frequent cough and cold, wheezing, fever, dust allergy, sore throat, chest pain, breathing problems, mucus membrane, excess discharge of phlegm, swelling in the legs and feet, loss of weight, and pneumonia.

You should include fresh fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants in the diet to improve the functioning of the lungs. You can also try some of the Ayurvedic herbs and home remedies to cure bronchitis.

Holy Basil: This herb is used in Ayurvedic treatments to prevent and cure bronchitis. Chew few leaves along with black pepper and honey. This helps to extract phlegm. A decoction of this herb is very effective in curing fever and cough that accompany bronchitis.

Chicory: The dry root should be first powdered; then one teaspoon of honey should be added to it and consumed thrice daily for a week. This is very effective in curing chronic bronchitis.

Ginger: Mix half a teaspoon each of ginger, pepper, honey, and clove. Consume this thrice a day. This mixture acts as an anti-pyretic and clears the respiratory tract.

Turmeric: Mix one teaspoon of fresh turmeric powder in a glass of milk and consume it thrice daily. It is very effective in curing respiratory tract problems including bronchitis.

Onion: It has expectorant properties that can cure respiratory tract infections. The juice of raw onion along with honey can be consumed.

These Ayurvedic herbs and home remedies will cure bronchitis and other respiratory problems effectively. However, you should consult an Ayurvedic practitioner if you have serious respiratory tract diseases.
